Explore Chail in Himachal Pradesh
Chail was created by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala after he was banished from Shimla by the British Government. The Maharaja then built Chail on three hills, as his own 'summer capital' in the late 19th century. This picturesque village situated at 2226m above Shimla is surrounded by forests of pine and gigantic deodar trees on all sides.
Spread over three hills, it is home to the Chail Palace, which is perched on a hilltop that seemingly floats on clouds. The palace is now a heritage hotel managed by Himachal Tourism. A definite must see, the palace hotel offers regal settings, a spectacular view and a varied range of accommodation to suit every budget.
The wildlife sanctuary at Chail was formerly a hunting reserve for the Maharaja of Patiala and was declared a sanctuary only in 1976. It plays host mainly to mammals such as rhesus macaque, leopards, Indian muntjac and goral crested porcupine.
Chail is also home to the highest cricket ground in the world, which was built in 1893. The cricket ground located at an altitude of 2,144m is also used as a polo ground. Chail is ideal for honeymooning couples and those seeking peace and seclusion.
It is well connected by road. From Shimla via Kufri the distance is 45 kms and via Kandaghat is 61 kms. Kalka is 86 kms away.
Tips for your Skiing Holiday
The mention of ski holidays would usually mean Switzerland. But Himachal Pradesh at the foothills of the Himalayas offers wonderful places for skiing like Manali, Kufri, Rohtang Pass, Kinnaur, Kullu, Lahaul and Spiti. Slopes at Narkanda are perfect for cross country skiing. An important thing to keep in mind on your ski holiday is your clothing.
The right clothing is an absolute must for a good ski experience. Good quality gear can make the difference between a comfortable enjoyable trip and a cold miserable one.
- Must have ski gear would include:
- Ski jacket or wind and waterproof jacket
- Ski pants or waterproof overtrousers
- Good quality sun glasses preferably UV Category 4
- High factor sun screen
- Ski socks - non cotton and thin
- Ski gloves or mittens
- Warm hat
Dress in layers
A good idea to stay warm is to wear many layers of clothing on your ski holiday. This way, depending on the weather, you can always remove a few if you get too warm. An inner thermal, followed by a regular sweatshirt, then a layer of fleece or a sweater under the jacket will ensure that you are adequately protected against the cold.
