Tackle Dry Eyes - Let your Eyes Rest Easy!

Tackle Dry Eyes - let your eyes rest easy! If you find your eyes itchy, dry and irritated, or the sensation of having a foreign object lodged in your eye, you could be suffering from dry eyes. Dry eyes can also lead to watering of eyes because of overstimulation of tears due to the dryness.

Dry eyes can be caused by the onset of age and also several other factors. Spending many hours before the computer monitor at work or watching too much television, excessive air conditioning or dry heating systems, extreme hot or cold climates, high altitudes and even smoking can cause dry eyes. Adopt these simple lifestyle changes to prevent dryness and improve your vision.

  • When you view the computer monitor or watch television remember to consciously blink your eyes, because blinking helps lubricate your eyes naturally
  • An easy way to relax your eyes while viewing the computer is to look at a distant object on a wall for about twenty seconds
  • Place cotton balls well soaked in warm tea over your eyelids for 5 minutes everyday
  • Wear sunglasses or goggles while going out on a sunny or windy day
  • Try to consume some Vitamin - A enriched food everyday to keep your eyes moist
  • Remember to drink a couple of litres of water to keep your self hydrated and also ensure you get adequate sleep
  • Consult your eye care practitioner about artificial tears that can lubricate your eyes and give relief

Treating dry eye problems is important not only for comfort, but also for the health of the cornea.

Tips to Avoid Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI)

Avoid Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI)Prevention is indeed many times better than cure. The old adage cannot be overemphasized especially to prevent Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI) which is becoming common in today's environment with the number of hours spent typing on the computer.

Making a few small changes to your work environment and postures at work can help avoid RSI which can call for a long drawn out healing process and the attendant frustration.

  • The next time you have to do a "Ctrl + C" or any such keyboard combination, remember to use both hands so that you will not have to force a single hand into any contortion while reaching out for the keys
  • A common habit of a few people is to lift up their little finger or their thumbs while they type. Ensure that you avoid this while typing and also do not rest your wrist or bend your hand at awkward angles
  • Posture is the most important aspect of preventing RSI. Make sure your chair at work or home supports you giving your spine an erect posture. A tightly rolled up soft towel can help give support to your back
