Yelagiri - a weekend retreat!

It would be a cliché to say that time stands still here. But it is this serenity that makes Yelagiri a perfect weekend retreat. Yes! You’ll surely enjoy the unhurried pace of life here! And what you’ll appreciate more is the quiet, calm surroundings - with no noisy crowds or the din of the city – to disturb you. So if you’re looking to rejuvenate your body and mind, head straight to Yelagiri.

Nestled amidst four hills, this popular hill station in Tamil Nadu, is situated at a height of 1410 meters above sea level. It won’t take you long to realize that Yelagiri is blessed with nature’s bounty. As you travel the winding Ghat road with 14 hairpin bends, you’ll be treated to a spectacular visual of lush mountains and green forests. Indeed you can see Nature in all her vibrancy here!

There’s a lot you can do at Yelagiri, but if you’re going there to soothe tense nerves, you can do nothing and still enjoy this place!

For the restless lot, the choice is wide! For starters, you can trek up the rugged hillocks or take long, refreshing walks though the narrow roads. Then you could indulge in some leisure boating at the Yelagiri Lake. If you’re taking children along, make sure, not to miss out on the Children’s Park which is just a walk away from the lake. The Government Fruit and Herbal Farms, the Telescope House and the artificial Punganur Lake are the other places of interest.

Map Reading can be fun. Here are a few basic rules!

Map reading can be quite tricky if you don’t know the basics. Open up a map and you’ll be surprised to see so many elements – each one playing a significant role to give you precise information. Once you’re familiar with these, map reading becomes not only easy, but great fun too!

Here are some basic rules to follow while reading a map.

  • Before you start off, make sure you have the latest map. Maps get revised from time to time.
  • Are you referring to the right map? Remember, to buy the regional map of the place you’re traveling in.
  • It is very important to orient yourself with the map. Look for the arrow that is usually at the top of the page. This is the real north. Based on this, you have to align yourself to the map to find out the direction you are heading.
  • Every map has:

    • a scale which relates distance that can help you calculate the actual distance between two places. For example, one inch equals one mile.
    • map symbols that represent buildings, trails, roads, bridges, and rivers.
    • a legend or key that lists the symbols and denotes what they mean
    • specific colours that identify various natural features like water (blue), forests (green), bare land (white), hills/mountains (brown)

Map Reading

Have a thorough look at all these elements and try and get a hang of these.

Remember, map reading does not require special skills. Just a little bit of concentration and common sense can steer you in the right direction.
