Avoid Dehydration This Summer!
Summer is back, bringing with it long hot days and also some minor illnesses. People of all ages have equal chances of losing their body fluids through different forms of physical activity, under normal conditions. It is more prominent especially in summer due to low humidity and high temperature in the atmosphere.
Dehydration is a condition which occurs when a person does not compensate for his loss of body fluid with more intake of fluids. Loss in small proportions doesn’t cause problems, and in most cases, they go completely unnoticed. But if you ignore your thirst, dehydration sets in and can slow you down.
Ways to handle dehydration:
- Increase your level of fluids intake. Drinking water is the best choice as it does not add calories to your diet.
- Wear light coloured, loose-fitting cotton clothes and use an umbrella to keep off direct exposure to sun. It would help you stay cooler and sweat less.
- Caffeine is a diuretic. It is probably a good idea to avoid caffeine in hot weather, during long workouts, or in other situations where you might sweat a lot.
- While participating in sports or other intense physical activities it is advisable to intake fluids before and after the activity, and also at regular intervals during the course of the activity.
The best thing you can do to prevent dehydration is to pay attention to your body. If you feel really dizzy, weak, or thirsty pay heed to those biological signs. It would help you stay healthy, this summer.
