Hypermilling - Maximizing fuel efficiency

Did you know Hypermiling is a term used in North America that refers to a set of techniques used to maximize fuel economy. Those who practice the techniques are referred to as "hypermilers." Read this article if you are one too… Don't blame the car for being a fuel guzzler. A little extra car care in addition to practicing good driving habits can go a long way in boosting fuel efficiency and saving money. Also remember, the oil crunch is threatening to worsen and fuel prices are only sky rocketing, which means it’s all the more important to get that extra mile for the fuel.

Here are some tips to improve fuel mileage and become a fuel-efficient driver.

Drive within speed limits.

Driving beyond 55 kmph increases wind resistance and thereby significantly reduces fuel efficiency.

Keep car tyres sufficiently inflated.

This not only ensures better mileage but also prolongs the life of the tyres.

Check wheel alignment.

Improper wheel alignment causes the car to be pulled to one side resulting in irregular tyre wear and also more drag for the engine. The direct impact of this is more fuel consumption.

Clear out excess items!

All those unnecessary tools, water bottles, magazines and other items that have been piling up in the back seat and floors need to go. Because for every extra 50 Kgs fuel economy reduces by 1-2 percent.

Replace filters regularly.

Clogged filters hamper your car performance and use up more fuel since less air gets in thereby creating a richer gas mixture.

Tune up for fuel efficiency!

Routine maintenance will help extend the life of your car and also optimize your car's performance, safety and mileage.

Don’t let the car idle.

Turn off the car engine while waiting for more than a minute or so. Excessive idling uses up more fuel, pollutes the air and burns a hole in your wallet.
