India is the 3rd largest car market in Asia Pacific. There are more than 17 brands looking to dominate the Indian car scene. But, which cars do the majority of Indians love?

#1. Maruti Alto – Maruti Alto is the ultimate car for the middle-class Indian, taking the title from Maruti 800. This car offers excellent mileage (18-20 km/litre). It has become the first Indian car to sell more than 2,00,000 units in a single financial year.

#2. Maruti Wagon R – Maruti Wagon R scores in the area of fuel-efficiency and safety features. ‘R’ in the name stands for ‘Recreation’. It is a car with unconventional looks with a box type body. Its exterior has undergone several modifications since launch to become the 2nd bestselling car in India today.

#3. Tata Indica –Tata Indica was the first truly “made in India” car. Mileage + Performance + Price make this hatchback India’s 3rd most loved car. It is also a hit with Tour operators across the country. With its rear seat being fully foldable, there is always room for more luggage.

#8. Maruti Omni – Maruti Omni is one of India’s oldest cars. It was launched back in 1984 but it’s still holding strong in the Top 10 list. Its popularity is owing to the fact that it can be used as a family car as well as for cargo. Omni was even modified as an ambulance. This car surely has a long way to tread.

#9. Maruti 800 – Maruti 800, launched in 1983, is India’s oldest car. This middle-class delight is a legend. The first car rolled out was gifted to Lord Venkateswara (Tirupati). The first owner – Harpal Singh bought the car for Rs. 48,000, and took the keys from Smt. Indira Gandhi. The company is phasing out the car, but as of 2011, it has sealed its spot in the Top 10!

#10. Mahindra Bolero – In a sea of small cars, an SUV is a welcome change! Mahindra Bolero is the 10th most popular car in India. It is powerful and elegant. The design makes driving in Indian roads a cakewalk. The car is powered by an impressive 2.5L engine and is available in 8 different variants.
