Clear the dilemma of selecting your first car

Posted by Royal Sundaram on 09 Jan 2013

Buying a car is a big decision and even bigger when it’s your first car. Your main aim should be to get one that gets you a good deal and all the features that you want. For this you need to do some groundwork and be certain about the model you choose. Go through a few tips we have to make the right choice for your first car –

Don’t settle on a car with preconceived notion –

Before you buy a car gather all the information about it like technical specifications, mileage etc. After you have enough information you must first go for virtual car shopping this will help you to a great extent in getting additional information of the car, especially from current users. Avoid going with a pre conceived notion for or against any car. Keep an open mind and buy only after you consider all the pros and cons.

Know your priorities –

Every car has a different USP to offer. Some could give you great pick up, some give high mileage, some have additional safety features, some are economical to maintain etc. So be sure of what is your priority when buying a car. If you want a car that gives excellent mileage, there’s no point in buying one that is well known for its safety features only. Do factor in aspects like the size of your family and the capacity of the car to accommodate the same.

Set a budget –

A very important deciding factor is your budget. Set a maximum limit that you can afford so you have the option of looking at other models. In case you are opting for a car loan then you need to be sure of the maximum limit for the EMI you can pay on the basis of your current income. Remember it’s not just the cost of the car that you need to pay, but there are a few hidden costs as well like insurance, registration, fuel and maintenance. So consider your daily expense as well.

Take a test drive –

That first time when you get the feel of the car you ‘could be owning’ is splendid. So don’t miss out on that. Also, a test drive reveals many pros and cons of the car that could go unnoticed. While taking a test drive, ensure that you are comfortable and satisfied with the car. Check how easy the car is to handle, the leg space, luggage space etc.
