Mindful Eating

Posted by Royal Sundaram on 05 Nov 2015

Celebrate this festive season with mindful eating!

We dwell in a country that is well known for its cultural and traditional festivals. People from each religion celebrate festivals in their own unique way according to their rituals and beliefs. Festive season for most of us means a lot of eating. With family, friends and delicious food around, it can be a time of overindulgence and thus for most of us there is a serious concern about weight gain.

This festive season, take a healthier approach.

Enjoy mindful eating so that you keep yourself and your family healthy. Most people say that it is difficult for them to eat healthy especially during the festive season because that is the time they want to enjoy their favorite foods. However, you can still enjoy your favorite foods by having them in moderation. As we say, it is all about eating mindful, not mindless. Mindful eating is nothing but paying attention while eating.

Conquer the festive food extravaganza with these tips –

  • Focus on the portions

You don’t have to deprive yourself of your favorite festive snacks and desserts. Just eat them in smaller portions and less often. Moderation is the key.

  • Eat Slowly

Enjoy each bite. Chew properly. Put your spoon or fork down while chewing. This helps to give your body enough time to let your brain know that you are satisfied.

  • Eat when you are hungry

Do not just eat when you see food around or when the clock says it’s time. Wait until you are hungry. But do not wait to get famished as you may end up overeating then. Make mindful decisions by listening to your body’s physical hunger.

  • Focus on family and friends and not on food

Festivals are the time when family and friends come together to celebrate with one another. Focus on spending time together, sharing love and having quality conversations instead of shifting your focus on food.

  • Choose your favorite food items and relish them

Do not restrict yourself. You must enjoy your favorite indulgences. Savor them. Avoiding them completely may cause negative feelings in you which may lead to overindulgence. Instead, why not avoid the things that you are not really fond of? This will definitely save you some calories.

  • Do not arrive hungry at a party

If your friend has invited you over or there is some other party to celebrate the festival, do not arrive hungry. If you are hungry, eat something. You can go for a small protein-rich snack so that you reach the party with a good appetite. This will help you avoid eating more than your body needs.

  • Use technology

We are all getting dependent on the modern technology for every small task. Instead of eating mindlessly while using Smartphone, why not use it in a better way? Most smart phones have apps that manage food records and count calories. These apps help you track what you eat and provide guidance on healthy food choices.
