“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” This Native American proverb describes the importance of saving the planet for future generations. Earth is the only planet where life exists, be it plants, animals or humans.
The world now marks the Earth Day to make the human race aware of the importance of Mother Earth. Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22 in more than 192 countries with events being held worldwide to show support for environmental protection. With increasing global warming and depleting natural resources, taking measures to protect and keep the planet safe has become a necessity that we can no longer afford to ignore.
Measures to Protect and Keep the Planet Safe
Here are some things that you can do to protect the planet and keep it in balance:
Conserving Water: Did you know that only about 2.5% of the water found on the surface of the earth is drinkable? This is insufficient for the constantly growing population, making water conservation a necessity. Rain water harvesting can help increase the supply of water. Avoid leaving the water running when washing dishes or clothes or even while shaving or brushing your teeth. Reuse water from boiling vegetables to water the plants. Choose the water-conserving model when purchasing equipment like dish washer or washing machine.
Preventing Air Pollution: When the amount of carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) increases in the atmosphere, the air becomes unfit for breathing. Car pooling or using public transport is a great way to save the atmosphere. If you are going a short distance, choose to walk or use a bicycle. Save electricity by avoiding overcooling or overheating your home or office.
Conserving Energy: Using non conventional sources of energy like solar power, wind energy and biogas energy can help cut down the use of electricity and nonrenewable fuels like petroleum and coal. Consciously switch off lights and fans when exiting a room. Roll down the windows of your car instead of putting on the air conditioner. Unplug your appliances if you are going to be away from home for a few days.
Planting Trees: Trees infuse life-giving oxygen into the atmosphere and prevent soil erosion. The cutting down trees for timber, agriculture, production of other materials puts a burden on the land and endangers many species of birds and animals. Therefore, plant more trees, reduce the use of paper and recycling plastic bags to contribute towards saving the planet.
Following these simple tenets will not only ensure in keeping our planet’s ecosystem stable but also help keep it safe.
