The math of weight loss

Posted by Royal Sundaram on 30 Nov 2010

We are racing towards the finish-line of 2010 and all set to start the journey of 2011. One of the ‘rituals’ of welcoming the New Year includes making “resolutions”. The most common global resolution is “weight loss”.

How easy it is to gain weight, how difficult it is to lose it and how we unknowingly consume additional calories, we’ll see it in the following article.

Let us do quick math of calories consumption for a few food items and beverages without which our day is incomplete.

  • As we all know: 7,700 calories = 1 Kg

TEA (WITH MILK AND SUGAR)

  • 1 cup of tea = 50 calories.
  • Throughout the year = 50 X 365 = 18,250 calories
  • Weight you might gain from an “extra cup of tea” through the year
  • = 18,250 / 7,700 (18,250 divided by 7,700)
  • = 2.3 kg per year!!

INDIAN BREADS

  • 1 Roti = 50 calories
  • 1 Paratha = 243 calories
  • Difference in calories = 243 – 50 = 193 calories higher in paratha
  • Weight you might gain by opting for 1 paratha instead of 1 roti through the year
  • = (193 X 365) / 7700
  • = 9.1 kg per year!!

PIZZA

  • 1 small pizza = 860 calories.
  • 10 pizzas = 860 X 10 = 8,600 calories.
  • Weight you might gain
  • = 8,600 / 7,700
  • = 1.1 kg per 10 small pizzas!!

Your body loses weight when the number of calories you burn is more than the number of calories you intake. This CANNOT be achieved by cutting down your food, but rather through a balance of right diet and exercise.

Let’s look at a few activities and the energy you spend for it and hence the number of days you would require to lose a kilo!

WALKING

  • For 30 minutes = 52 calories.
  • No. of days required to lose 1 kg
  • = 7700 / 52
  • = 148 days!!

SWIMMING

  • For 30 minutes = 121 calories.
  • No. of days required to lose 1 kg
  • = 7700 / 121
  • = 63 days!!

JOGGING

  • For 30 minutes = 163 calories.
  • No. of days required to lose 1 kg
  • = 7700 / 163
  • = 47 days!!

So before you include “weight loss” in your New Year’s resolution, understand the mathematics and balance of ‘what you eat’ and ‘what you work-out’! But before that, do cover yourself with Royal Sundaram Health Insurance.

We would also like to add, that before you plan any weight loss do consult your doctor, as they would be in a better position to assess your nutrition and activity needs, and hence guide you.

We wish you a good, fit and healthy body!
