A Sri Lankan Holiday

Well, the travel season is approaching fast, have you planned your vacation? Or are you still struggling to finalise a location? The hot destination this season is Sri Lanka. Yes, not too far away from your home country is an exotic location you’ve mostly overlooked. Here’s a little about this wonderland –


Places to visit –

Anuradhapura: This is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka. It is famous for the well preserved ruins of ancient Lankan civilization. This place is also considered sacred to the Buddhist world and has monasteries covering an area of over sixteen square miles. Anuradhapura is also significant in Hindu legend as it is considered the capital of the Asura King Ravana in the Ramayana.

Dambulla Cave Temple: This is located near Colombo and Kandy and is the best preserved and largest temple in the country. Surrounded by rock towers and caves, tourists can find several paintings and statues within these caves. The main attraction of the site includes Cave of the Great Kings, the Cave of the Divine King and the Great New Monastery.

Polonnaruwa: This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the northern part of the country. The different tourist attractions here include Lankatilaka Temple, the Royal Palace and the Thuparama.

Sigiriya: Amongst the most attractive UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the country, this is situated at the heart of the District of Matale. You can visit the gardens of Sigriya, the Sigriya Rock and the Mirror Wall.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage: This place is situated at Kegalle. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage had around 84 elephants in 2008. The orphanage is open to public and tourists where they can see elephants bathing and eating.

Knuckles Mountain Range: The adventurist travelers need not be disheartened. Knuckles Mountain Range offers you the opportunity to try your hands at activities like hiking, rock climbing and cycling. You can also view a spectacle of flora and fauna that this place offers.

Also, needless to say the beaches of Sri Lanka are wonderful to spend time at. Some of the popular beaches include Negombo beach, Nilaveli Beach, Beruwela, Bentota, Hikkaduwa beach etc.

Cuisine –

A costal country like Sri Lanka is popular for the sea food it has to offer. The popular dishes you can try there include Kiribath, wattalapam, kottu etc. Sri Lankan cuisine show influence from Portugues and Dutch cuisine as well. A few such recipes include Lamprais, Breudher and Bolo Fiado. While you are there, don’t forget to sip tea at the major tea producing country in the world.

A few things to remember when holidaying in Sri Lanka:

  • Make sure to visit your doctor six weeks before travel for general advice on travel risks, vaccinations and malaria.
  • 1 INR is equal to approximately 2 Sri Lankan Rupees
  • Tipping is not customary in Sri Lanka as in most hotels and restaurants a 10% service charge is automatically added to room charges and meals
