“I like my money right where I can see it…Hanging in my closet! – Carrie Bradshaw”
If you are someone who identifies with the quote above, then Dubai is just the city for you. It is a city that is so synonymous with shopping that shopping is considered a national pastime. Dubai is known to have something that you can always buy, anytime of the year. Gold, spices, rugs, carpets and electronics jostle for your attention as easily as Louboutin, Vera Wang, Chanel, Blahnik, Prada and the quintessential Louis Vuitton.
Luxury in Dubai can be found everywhere; from residential buildings, hotels, discos to malls. The City of Malls boasts of some of the best malls in the world where you can find every luxury brand at reasonable prices. Luxury shopping in Dubai is recommended, given the tax-free status of the city, which makes such brands easily accessible to everyone and cheaper than any other place in the world.
The list of must-shop malls include The Dubai Shopping Mall, known for the first Bloomingdale’s out of London, over 1000 stores and the musical Dubai Fountains, The Deira Gold Souk for the best gold bargains in the world, Al Fahidi Street for the best electronics at bargain prices, The Bur Dubai Souk for exotic fabrics, textiles and jewelry, Karama Shopping Centre for handicrafts and souvenirs at reasonable prices and, the Wafi Mall known for boutique stores with the famous Souk Khan Murjan, in the basement, where you can find an interesting collection of lamps and antiques. The Wafi Mall also houses the Wafi Gourmet, where gourmet lovers can find the best culinary delights stacked alongside regional deli items like pickles, olives and cheese.
For some of us though, shopping for branded goods is not the only excitement. At times, we seek that elusive souvenir which always takes the mantle of pride for simply being a great bargain and a cherished travel memory. The ideal destination then would be the Dubai Flea Market, held weekly at the Dubai Trade Centre or Safa Garden, where you can look for second hand clothes, household items, electronics, knick knacks, everything almost at throwaway prices. For bargains on clothes or factory seconds, head to Sana Fashions, Carrefouror Studio R Factory; you may also want to check out Lamcy Plaza, Mexx for Less or Factory Fashions for those branded clothes at absolute bargain prices.
The best time to shop in Dubai is undisputedly during January with the Dubai Shopping Festival. The Festival attracts several tourists and residents alike for the sheer enormity of concerts, special offers and yes, the best products money can buy. However, if you missed that, head to Dubai in summer for the Dubai Summer Surprises. The DSS is also a month long shopping festival offering the best in shopping with activities for the entire family. If you are visiting Dubai in November, head for the Global Pavilion that houses artists and artifacts from all over the world and with some of the best bargains, especially in the last week of the festival.
As with any shopping experience, you need to be careful and check what you buy for quality and yes, cost feasibility. Explore, bargain and hoard up, but do remember to insure your travel with Royal Sundaram Travel Insurance before you step into Shopper’s Paradise.
