The All New Volkswagen Polo - Subtle Yet Menacing

18 August, 2014

Volkswagen (VW), a company that is synonymous with ‘engineering excellence’ and ‘ingenious design’, manufactures cars in every segment in the Indian market; each car that is comparable with the other. The most popular car by VW being its hatchback, the Polo.

Launched in 2009, owing to its arresting looks, the Polo quickly became India’s favourite premium hatchback. VW didn’t compromise on power, fuel efficiency, luxury, or sturdiness while making it a small yet compelling car. The VW Polo was one of the best looking cars in its segment; only now, it looks much better.

With a facelift, new detailed dual-power headlamps, a chrome grill, new 10-spoked alloys, and new tail-lamps, the VW Polo looks nothing less than stunning. And that’s just from the outside. The inside’s a whole new deal. The first thing one’d notice is the leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel, which would look good on a car even twice that of Polo’s price. People’s whims and fancies have also been taken care of, by adding a metallic border to the AC vents, climate control panel, and the two DIN audio system that now gets Bluetooth, USB, aux-in compatibility, and memory card slots as well.

The red display in the centre of the instrument panel has been replaced by a white one, with a larger font size. Also, the seat colours considerably brighten up the vehicle. The feeling inside the cabin of the Polo is exquisite, as VW has focused on every small detail such as the fit and finish of the stitching on the seats, gearbox, and steering wheel; something that no other carmaker can match.

Acceleration is stronger than before, even in the diesel variant. The new VW Polo manages to hit 100 kph in 13.08 seconds in wet conditions, which makes overtaking other cars effortless. The slick gearbox makes shifting gears a treat too. With prices for the 1.2 petrol in the range of Rs 4.99–6.07 lakh and those for the 1.5 diesel in the range Rs. 6.27–7.37 lakh (note that all prices are approximate ex-showroom prices in Delhi).

Safety is something that even the Polos base model doesn’t compromise on. Loaded with dual SRS airbags, ABS, Ventilated Front Disc Brakes, and an Electronic anti-theft immobiliser, it’s one of the safest vehicles in its segment. Although VW meets the highest safety standards in India, selecting the right car insurance policy is an essential part while buying a new car.
