What is Road Side Assistance?

07 July, 2014

Cars are one of the most secure assets that an individual can own. In fact, few people ever imagine themselves in a situation where their car unexpectedly breaks down, leaving them stranded in the middle of nowhere-at least not until it happens to them. In earlier days, such a situation would not pose too excruciating a problem, since cars were then easier to repair by way of mechanical tinkering. However, with the likes of present-day modern cars that have extensive integrated-electronic systems, experiencing a situation like this can be a massive stress-test for any driver.

Most car owners would turn to calling their local mechanic, who in all probability will end up charging a very premium rate for even easy fixes such as replacing a deflated tyre; in fact, you would be hard pressed to complain about getting fleeced when you are stuck stranded with an expensive vehicle that you obviously cannot leave unattended. The few lucky ones, however, will be heaving a sigh of relief that they can rely on Road Side Assistance.

In short, Road Side Assistance is a service provided to a motorist whose vehicle has a breakdown or mechanical failure either at home or on the road. RSA provides you with assistance for a number of different scenarios: if you have a mechanical breakdown, flat tyre, dead battery, no fuel, even when you have locked yourself out of your car. Most services allow you to contact them via phone and/or text. On being notified, a patrol vehicle will be sent to your location and will help get your car restarted, or arrange for your car to be towed to a repairer. Some will even provide you with a replacement vehicle to use till your car is repaired.

Road Side Assistance is not too dissimilar to a car insurance service. Although most premium car brands such as Mercedes and Rolls Royce gratuitously offer RSA as a part of their after-sales service, few are aware that even an everyday Joe can also avail this service. For example, some RSA organizations provide car owners with a membership model, for which they pay a nominal three-month or maybe yearly fee. RSA is especially important for people who go on long commutes or those uninitiated with the workings of their car. Rest assured, for car owners who use their vehicle on a daily basis, RSA can be an extremely underrated investment.
