Mumps is a transmittable disease caused primarily by a virus. Mumps begins with a few days of headache, irregular fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Most commonly, people have swelling on their salivary glands. This is the main reason behind puffy cheeks and a swollen jaw. Complications in adults can include orchitis, meningitis, and deafness of the infected adult.

Initial symptoms of mumps are non-specific. The symptoms include headache, malaise, and fever, followed by swelling of the parotid (salivary) glands within a day.

 

Other non-specific symptoms include low-grade fever, muscle aches, malaise, headache, and reduced appetite. This occurs during the first forty-eight hours of being infected with mumps. Characteristically, parotid gland (a type of salivary gland) swelling is present on day three of infection.

 

However, grown-ups are more inclined to experience a respiratory-only clutter of symptoms while kids between 2-9 years of age are more prone to experience the classic display of mumps with parotid gland swelling.

  • Check the sample of blood, urine, saliva to validate the diagnosis.

Measles-containing vaccine, for safety, should not be delivered before completing 270 days or nine months of age, the second dose should be administered at fifteen to eighteen months and the third dose at four to six years of age.
