A migraine is a severe headache, the causes for which remain unclear. They are accompanied by vomiting, nausea, and intense sensitivity to light and sounds. Migraines are often left undiagnosed and untreated even though they usually begin early in life. Treatment includes pain management and preventive measures to ensure they do not occur. Migraines have four stages (though many patients may not experience all four stages) these are:
i. Prodrome: A day or two before the onset of a migraine, patients may experience depression, food cravings, constipation, food cravings, stiffness in the neck, hyperactivity, irritability and uncontrolled yawning.
ii. Aura: These occur before or during a migraine and include light flashes, touching sensations and disturbances in motor or speech functions of an individual. Vision loss, pins and needles in arms or legs or rarely limb weakness (hemiplegic migraine)may be experienced.
iii. Attack: If left untreated a migraine attack may last anywhere between 4-72 hours. Migraine pain is characterized by throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head. Sensitivity to light, sound or smell, nausea and vomiting, blurred vision, lightheadedness, or fainting spells.
iv. Postdrome: This is the final stage and patients may feel drained and washed out, occasionally some patients report feeling mildly euphoric.
