Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is a procedure used to treat coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD refers to the narrowing of the blood vessels (the coronary arteries) that supply oxygen and nutrients to the heart. The narrowing mostly occurs due to a buildup of fatty material within the artery walls. This limits the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the heart. Sometimes the arteries may get completely blocked causing a heart attack.
Hence surgeons treat the blocked or narrowed arteries to remove the blockage and restore the flow of blood and life-giving oxygen to the heart. What happens during the CABG surgery is that the blocked portion of the coronary artery is bypassed with another piece of blood vessel.
The grafts, or blood vessels used for the bypass could be sections of a vein from the legs or an artery in the chest or wrist. One end of the healthy blood vessel is fixed above the blockage and the other end below the blockage. This way the blood is rerouted or bypassed around the blockage in the artery.
Signs and symptoms that you may have CAD and may need CABG surgery include:
• Chest pain (angina) including pressure or tightness in the chest. Women may feel a fleeting or sharp pain in the abdomen, back or arm
• Shortness of breath, extreme fatigue with exertion
• Heart attack caused by completely blocked coronary artery. Signs of a heart attack include tremendous pressure in the chest, pain in the shoulder or arm, shortness of breath and sweating. Women may experience nausea, back or jaw pain. Sometimes a heart attack may occur without any apparent symptoms
At the onset of any such symptoms, medical attention should be sought immediately.
