Car registration is mandatory according to the law of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The Act gives the power to RTO to look after the registration of every vehicle in India. The process of vehicle registration is easy. First, when the owner buys a car, the dealer registers it on a temporary registration, which is valid for a few days. The owner then has to submit a few documents to get permanent registration from the RTO.

The road tax for the car changes according to the vehicle. If the price of the car is below Rs. 10 Lakh, the RTO charges 12%. However, if the price of the car is above Rs. 10 Lakh, the RTO charges 14%.
